Civitai Model Licensing; What is it, when does it apply, and what does it affect?
The vast majority of resources shared on Civitai are either Stable Diffusion 1.5 (SD 1.5) Or Stable Diffusion XL (SDXL) these resources were created with the CreativeML Open RAIL-M and Open Rail++ licenses respectively, which allow addendums, as determined by the user.
Any permissions can be added, as long as they don’t contradict the core tenants of the Open Rail license.
User Permissions Settings
Upon model upload, you’ll see the following license permissions;
Permission set here define guidelines for what users can do with your resource. Uncheck any option you’re not comfortable with.
- Use without crediting me: Allow users to produce and share outputs without crediting the creator of the model; they can claim it as their own, if they so wish.
- Share Merges of this model: Allow users to merge, finetune or train using this resource, or out-puts from this resource.
- Use different permissions on merges: If merging is allowed (based on the previous checkbox), define whether users are required to keep the same permissions you’ve set here on their newly created model.
Commercial Use Settings
Permission set here define guidelines for what users can do with your resource. Uncheck any option you’re not comfortable with. By default. these will all be set to allow.
- Sell generated images: Allow users to sell the outputs of this model for monetary gain.
- Use On Civitai Generation Services: Allow users to generate with this resource on Civitai’s on-site Generator, or “create” function.
- Use on other generation services: Allow other sites that offer generation services to provide this model to their users.
- Sell this model or merges: Allow users to sell this model or any merges created with it.
License display on Model Card
Upon unchecking any of the above permissions, your resource will change. Icons will be added to the resource Information Block denoting your choices;
If your resource utilizes either SD 1.5 or SDXL as a Base, a new license with your desired permissions will be generated and added to your model page;
Models that don’t utilize the Open RAIL License, or an Open RAIL variant, will not have an addendum license generated, instead these permissions act as good-faith call outs about what the creator does or does not wish to have done with their model.
Frequently Asked Questions
I have evidence that someone has broken the terms of the addendum license on my resource! What do I do?
- If the breach has occured on Civitai.com report it! We take licensing seriously and will act to protect your work.
- If the breach is on another platform (not Civitai.com), contact a lawyer and discuss what your options are.
