Ads?!
We know you’ve been asking for more ways to earn Buzz, and we hear you! One of the biggest challenges has been the cost of running generation. Now, with the introduction of “Blue Buzz” ads can help bridge the gap. By scrolling past ads in the image and model feeds, you can passively earn Blue Buzz, which goes directly toward your free daily generations.
This helps offset our costs and allows us to provide you with more opportunities to generate for free!
Why were Ads Removed Before?
Long-time Civitans might remember when we first experimented with ads. It didn’t go as planned, and we ended up removing them for a few key reasons:
- Just like you, we’re users of the site, and we can’t stand intrusive ads and unnecessary cookies.
- The previous ads were… well, ugly. They really detracted from the overall experience.
- We attempted to make ads work across different content types, like showing mature ads with mature content. The result? A lot of really bad ads that only made us dislike them more.
- Back then, we hoped ads could be our primary source of revenue, but that meant we couldn’t offer anything in return for viewing them.
In short, the ads were annoying, unattractive, low quality, and disruptive without adding any real value. So, we decided to scrap them and focus on improving the Buzz system to better meet our revenue needs. Which leads us to the next question:
Why did we Bring Ads Back?
We’ve taken the time to address the concerns we previously had with ads. Thanks to revenue from other channels, we can now make ads an optional addition, rather than a necessity.
- We still hate ads, but unless you’re in Europe, there’s no need to agree to additional cookies.
- Instead of cluttering model pages and feeds with ugly banners, ads are now seamlessly integrated into your browsing experience. It’s easy to distinguish ads from content, but they’re much less intrusive.
- Ads only appear in specific scenarios, like when you’re not logged in or when you’re browsing exclusively Safe For Work content.
- Plus, any tier of Civitai Membership means you won’t see ads – unless you want to! Members can toggle ads on or off in their Account Settings.
- The best part? You now earn Buzz just by browsing the site with ads enabled.
Earning Buzz from Ad-Views
Ads offer a way to supplement free Buzz for users who can’t afford a subscription. If you do have a membership, you can still earn Blue Buzz by enabling ads in your Account Settings.
When you’re browsing the site without an ad blocker or a Safe For Work filter, you’ll earn “Blue Buzz” at a rate of ?0.25 per ad viewed. This special Buzz can only be used in the onsite generator at present, but will be expanded to cover more site services very soon!
Currently, there’s a cap of ?100 Blue Buzz per hour and ?400 Blue Buzz per day, though we may adjust these limits as we fine-tune the system.
Buzz earned from viewing ads is credited at the top of each hour (e.g., 1:00, 2:00, 3:00, etc.), and the daily limit resets every day at 12:00 AM UTC.
Where (and How) do I See Ads on Civitai?
There are a number of conditions that must be met before ads will display;
- You must be viewing PG or PG 13 content. Selecting R or higher will preclude ads from displaying.
- If you’re a paying Member, you’ll have to opt-in to view ad content, from the Account Settings menu;
- Free users, and users who are not logged in, do not have the ability to toggle off Ad Content.

- The Image Feed
- The Model Feed
- Beneath the Generation Information pane on images opened full-size
- Below the User panel on Models
Generator Buzz – Blue Buzz – Bluzz!
When you browse ads, you’ll now earn “Blue Buzz,” a special type of Buzz that can only be used in the Image Generator. This Buzz still compensates creators but cannot be traded between users. By default, the generator will use your Blue Buzz first before tapping into your regular purchased and earned Buzz.
Blue Buzz will be refunded when images fail to generate, the same as when paying with regular purchased Buzz.
What’s Next for Ads!
This reintroduction of ads is currently an experiment. Our goal is for it to break even and provide more users with a way to generate content. As long as it’s achieving that, we’ll consider it a success. However, you can expect tweaks and changes as we continue to refine the system!
FAQ
Do I have to watch the ads in their entirety to receive Blue Buzz?
No, as soon as an ad has loaded into the placeholder space, you’re earning Blue Buzz passively – you won’t earn more for clicking on or viewing ads in their entirety.
I’m seeing placeholder boxes instead of ads!
Our Ad-serve partners have told us that our fill-rate will stabilize over the next couple of weeks; if you’ve met all the requirements to see ads (see above), but aren’t – please be patient.
I’m a Member – does My Member Bonus Multiplier apply to earning Blue Buzz?
Yes!
Can we do anything else with Blue Buzz? Model Training?
Yes! Blue Buzz can be used for Image Generation and LoRA Training.
